DIY Natural Rainbow Bath Milk Fizzy Powder
Have I mentioned that I like baths? They’re kind of my THING. Some day I will have a princess bath tub, but for now I soak in my lil ol’ tub in my lil’ ol normal bathroom. What I lack in fancy bathroom design I make up for with fancy foaming skin treats. Like this luxurious DIY Rainbow Bath Fizz! This bath potion is essentially a deconstructed bath bomb. Same fizz, soothing scent and skin softening effects. Less time and fussiness. Perfect for impatient and busy people! Isn’t that most of us?
I’ve wanted to offer a bath bomb DIY to you all for quite some time now. But, honestly, I’m not the sort of person who waits around for bath bombs to “cure” and harden. That usually takes 24-48 hours. I want to make a thing and use that thing. I’m guessing you’re in the same boat. You’re doing too many badass things to wait around for a craft to cure. So, bath fizz it is.
This bath fizz is:
Made with baking soda, epsom salt, citric acid, cornstarch (arrowroot also works), jojoba oil and (optional) coconut milk powder.
Colored with natural food-based powders like matcha green tea, butterfly blue pea flower, beet and dragonfruit.
Scented with essential oils — from Mountain Rose Herbs (affordable, Organic, sustainably made and huge variety).
Done in 5-10 minutes flat.
Great for a DIY craft night with friends. Galentines, anyone?
Naturally skin-softening and soothing.
And best of all? It fizzes delightfully and colors your bath water like a mermaid princess powder puff dream.
You can make rainbow layers of your bath fizz in your storage jars — or keep the colors separate. I like to scent each color differently if I’m keeping the colors separate. I scent them all the same if I’m layering all together in my storage jars. Those jars are La Parfait, by the way — great for storing all manner of dry goods and super cute for gifting crafts as well.
Essential Oil Suggestions
I’m a creature of habit. So I tend to gravitate to simple, soothing peppermint and lavender in this Bath Fizz DIY. Sometimes I use them as individual scents and sometimes I blend them together.
There are infinite essential oil combinations you could explore with this DIY, but you only need a few drops for the whole batch (10 drops max). Essential oils are highly concentrated — a little bit goes a long way. So it’s best to combine only 2-3 essential oils for the best result here.
An easy way to combine scents with great results is to do 4 drops of one oil, 4 drops of another and 2 drops of a third oil. 4,4,2. It’s a simple way to remember how to blend essential oils intentionally (without waste).
Some essential oil scents blend better than others. Below I’ve listed combinations that I think work well together for different desired conditions. Choose 2-3 essential oils per category for great results.
Sensual (choose 2-3): vanilla absolute or benzoin resin (a vanilla analog), frankincense, sandalwood, rose, helichrysum, geranium, palmarosa, ylang ylang, amyris
Soothing, relaxing (choose 2-3): peppermint, lavender, copaiba balsam, spearmint, cardamom, eucalyptus
Clarifying, citrusy (choose 2-3): lemon, sweet orange, tangerine, ylang ylang, fir needle, pine, juniper, mandarin, lime, lemon grass, lemon balm, vetiver
Sweet floral (choose 2-3): neroli (orange flower), jasmine, geranium, palmarosa, lavender, chamomile, sweet orange, rose, vanilla absolute or benzoin resin
Grounding, warming (choose 2-3): patchouli, frankincense, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, fresh ginger, ginger, black pepper
Most of the suggested essential oils are very affordable. Word to the wise, essential oils of rose, helichrysum, sandalwood, vanilla and lemon balm are precious (aka expensive) — be cautious using these in this DIY. If you LOVE them, go for it! But considering the investment they might be better used in a homemade perfume or serum, where their magical qualities serve your skin directly.

DIY Natural Rainbow Bath Milk Fizzy Powder
author: Renee Byrd - prep time: 5 mins - makes: 2 3/4 cups
Notes: For a milk bath you can use coconut milk powder OR cow milk powder. Both are moisturizing and skin softening.
Supplies
1 cup Baking Soda
1/2 cup Citric Acid
1/2 cup Epsom Salts or Dead Sea Salt
1/2 cup Corn Starch
Optional: 1 tbsp coconut milk powder OR regular cow milk powder
3 tbsp food-grade natural color powder (for pink, green, blue I used 1 tbsp Dragonfruit Powder, 1 tbsp Matcha Green Tea Powder, 1 tbsp Butterfly Blue Pea Flower Powder)
2 tbsp Jojoba Oil (or melted unrefined Coconut Oil)
10 drops Essential Oils of your choice
4 jars, for storing
Optional: dried rose petals, lavender buds, chamomile flowers or other botanical flowers as add-ins
Suggested: face mask for blending
Method
In a large bowl whisk together all of the dry ingredients except the color powders: baking soda, citric acid, salt, corn starch and milk powder. Note: You may want to wear a face mask or wrap a scarf over your nose/mouth to avoid inhaling citric acid. Break up any clumps in the mix with your hands.
Add your jojoba oil and essential oils to the dry mix and stir to combine thoroughly. Once again, break up any clumps with your hands.
Separate out your bath fizz powder into 3 separate bowls. To each bowl add 1 tbsp natural food-grade color powder.
For pink: add 1 tbsp dragonfruit powder (or any pink color powder) to 1/3 of the bath fizz powder.
For green: add 1 tbsp matcha green tea powder (or any green color powder) to 1/3 of the bath fizz powder.
For blue: add 1 tbsp butterfly blue pea flower powder (or any blue/purple color powder) to 1/3 of the bath fizz powder.
Store each color in a separate jar, or layer the colors in one jar for a rainbow effect.
Optional: add a pinch of dried flower petals to each of the jars of colored bath fizz for a touch of luxury. I add rose to pink, lavender to blue and chamomile / bachelors buttons to green.
TO USE: Add a generous scoop of the bath fizzy powder to a hot bath and watch it fizz and color your water. Soak. Enjoy!
